CCS Candy Planning Software training: Online vs Live Course. Which one is the best for you?

Written by Kobus le Roux

RIB Candy, also known as CCS Candy is a robust, power-packed software designed to handle project management, cost estimation, and control for construction professionals like you.

To use the software to its full potential requires some training and mastering. But how do you master this comprehensive tool? Here, we delve into a thorough comparison of the 4 training methodologies at your disposal: live online, on-demand video, live in-person, and online self-learning.

Live / Instructor-Led Online Training

Live online training brings the classroom to your desk, leveraging video services like Zoom or MS Teams. Imagine the immediacy of a traditional classroom experience, but from the comfort of your home or office. This method offers the following advantages:

  • Real-time interactions.  You can post questions immediately in the moment and get feedback.
  • Interactions with other students. You also interact with other students in a limited way and can hear their questions which may be something you actually wanted to know, but failed to ask
  • Quick doubt resolution.  If you are struggling with a concept of have doubts on the implementation, it can be quickly resolved by the instructor.
  • You don't have to travel and can attend the training from anywhere in the world depending on the time-zone.

On the flip side, the disadvantages of this method are:

  • Fixed scheduled times. You have to schedule a fixed time out of your schedule to attend. This may affect your ability to attend the training, especially where there are time zone differences.
  • Network connectivity and technical issues can sometimes play havoc with attendees in this setting.
  • It is challenging to learn a software application in a live-online setting. You need 2 screens or different devices, one to perform the work in the software and the other to engage with the instructor.
  • Live training can be frustrating depending on the specific group you share the classroom / online setting with. Sometimes you are way ahead or behind the rest of the group and that can negatively affect your training experience.

On-Demand, Online Video Training

Imagine being able to hit pause, rewind, or fast-forward on your trainer's instruction.  That's the luxury that on-demand video training provides. Pre-recorded video sessions, watchable anytime, anywhere, allow you to set your pace and schedule.

  • This method is cost effective. No traveling and accommodation costs.
  • Flexibility. You can schedule your training at your own leisure while you are on site, during lunchbreaks, at home or while sipping Margarita's on a remote island.
  • You move at your own pace. There is no-one to hold you back while they figure out where to switch on their laptop or still struggling to install the software.
  • On-demand allows for deeper focus and learning as you are able to pause the video, get some practice on a concept and rewind to specific areas of focus.
  • Better knowledge retention as on-demand allows you longer access to the course, so in 6-months time, you can do a refresher.

This may not be the method for you bases on the following disadvantages:

  • Lack of real-time interaction.  If you have doubts they are not resolved immediately.
  • Requires a high degree of self-discipline.  Because it's unstructured and not provided at a fixed, scheduled time, you have to manage yourself to complete the course.
  • No direct networking opportunities or learning from others in the course, however most on-demand courses these days have discussion boards where students post questions or interact with each other on a topic.
  • It also requires two devices / screens. One to watch the video on and the other to perform the instructions on the software.

Live In-Person Training

Live in-person training is the traditional route. You, along with other students, are physically present in a classroom, learning from an instructor.

The benefits are:

  • You get immediate feedback on your doubts or questions.
  • You can sort out technical queries instantly.
  • It's structured and scheduled so you set aside time, attend and complete the course without life or work getting in the way.
  • There are ample networking opportunities and an immersive learning environment.
  • You sometimes obtain wider knowledge on a topic by having access to the instructor directly.

The challenges of in-person training are:

  • Usually higher cost as you have to travel and allow for accommodation.
  • Cannot be attended from anywhere which limits your options of training provider and instructor.
  • Lacks flexibility in terms of your schedule and own pace.
  • Sharing the classroom with other students can be frustrating depending on how fast / slow you progress.

Online Self-Learning

If you're someone who loves the thrill of discovery, online self-learning could be your method of choice. This entails scouring the internet for the necessary information to master CCS Candy.

Advantages:

  • This method can be a flexible, no-cost way of learning
  • For some it's exciting and journey of discovery may lead to gaining a wide base of knowledge.
  • This also has most of the advantages of on-demand training, if you can find a the required scope.

Nevertheless, the disadvantages of this method are:

  • The volume of information available, especially on CCS Candy is currently quite limited.
  • The accuracy of the information is not guaranteed.
  • It requires a significant investment of time.
  • It may lead to gaps in knowledge. For someone setting out to gain knowledge on a topic, it's difficult to know what the scope of knowledge should comprise or what a comprehensive curriculum on the topic should contain.

How do I choose?

As you stand at the crossroads of these four distinct methods, remember, each path provides a valuable learning experience. Your choice should depend on and be led by your answers to the following questions:

  • What is your own preferred learning style?  Are you self-motivated and prefer to work at your own pace or do you require a structured environment for you to complete a course?
  • What time do you have available?  Think about where you currently are in life.  Are you unmarried, do you have kids, a spouse, two jobs, are you working on a remote site in Zambia.
  • What is your budget?  Is the company paying or are you doing this for yourself as a way to increase your knowledge and further your own career.
  • What are your learning objectives?

Regardless of the path you choose, remember that CCS Candy training is an investment that will yield considerable returns. The knowledge and skillset you acquire can significantly enhance your project planning and execution abilities.
